Shoulder Dislocation

Shoulder dislocation happens when the upper arm bone is also called as the humeral head gets out or is removed from the shoulders socket. This is very painful, and it can occur in any direction. Shoulder dislocation is to be treated by the medical profession only. Even though the shoulder joints are flexible, but they are highly susceptible to dislocation.

The shoulder dislocates in three directions, forward, backward, and downward. The treatment for a dislocated shoulder can only be done if the doctor knows the direction of dislocation. The shoulder does not dislocate easily; it requires a sudden force or a trauma to the shoulder joint for it to dislocate. It can happen during an accident or a sudden blow to the shoulder.


Whenever your shoulder dislocation happens, it will be followed by very acute pain in the area. Still, if that doesn’t happen other symptoms for a dislocated shoulder are

  • Deformity in the shoulder
  • Feeling like something has moved from its place
  • Muscle spasm
  • Numbness or not able to fell the area of the dislocation
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in the area
  • Bruising
  • Severe pain
  • Not being able to move the joint.

Causes for shoulder dislocation

Usually, a shoulder dislocation takes place because of any traumatic event. Shoulder dislocation may occur while performing any physical activity like throwing a ball. Not just this, any activity requiring an effort of the shoulder can lead to shoulder dislocation. Shoulder dislocation is most common in young people who are into physical sports. Sports such as gymnasts, skiing, boxing, etc. are a few examples that can lead to shoulder dislocation. Other than this, during accidents, the shoulder is easily dislocated. Sometimes seizures or electric shock can even lead to dislocation.

Risk Factors for Shoulder Dislocation

Apart from participating in sports and doing another physical activity, there can be certain other reasons that can lead to shoulder dislocation.

Gender Almost around 70 percent of shoulder dislocation occurs in males.

  • Age

It is most common during the age of 18 to 30, but it can still happen at any age.

  • Repetitive overhead movement

Repetitive overhead movement of the shoulder can cause the ligaments to hold the shoulder joints to stretch. When this happens, the shoulder joints become less stable, which may lead to shoulder dislocation.

  • Previous dislocation

A person whose shoulder has already been dislocated earlier before is more vulnerable to shoulder dislocation. The first dislocation may lead to the weakening of the surrounding tissues, thus making the joint unstable.

  • Anatomy and function

Sometimes a person has weak, shallow joints or weak shoulder muscles, which can cause a shoulder dislocation. The loose ligament also increases the risk of shoulder dislocation.

  • Genetics

Some people have issues that are not strong enough and malleable connective tissue in the body. This can be due to various factors like inherited from the family. These people may get shoulder dislocation even without injury or pain. These types of people also experience partial dislocations. In partial dislocation the joint usually slides back itself after the dislocation i.e., it corrects itself.


To prevent oneself from a shoulder dislocation, make sure to do the following

  • While playing sportswear necessary protective gear to protect yourself from any injury or harm
  • Exercise regularly to maintain the strength of your muscles and ligaments. Exercise is the best way to increase strength
  • Take care while driving and doing any outdoor activity, try to avoid falls.

If you have had a dislocated shoulder before, make sure to discuss it with the doctor and make up an exercise schedule as you are more susceptible to dislocation. Follow the exercise schedule daily to increase muscle flexibility and strength.
